While I was working on these paintings of dawn in the Wicklow mountains I was struck by the old conundrum of the relationship of the observed to the observer and it came to me that scientists who are struggling for a complete theory of everything by unifying quantum mechanics and the greater cosmology of the universe need to also tie in the position of the observing consciousness in order have a realistic Unified Theory. In the philosophy of the Zen master the Unified theory only exists because consciousness observes it. The laws of physics only exist because we need to explain the world around us in the same way religions grew out of early man's need to explain events that his newly conscious mind was observing

So also, the rivetting beauty of the dawn exists only because of the observer on the mountain and his emotional response
